Puerto Bolívar is an Ecuadorian port city in the province of El Oro. Formal Puerto Bolívar is an urban parish of the canton of Machala and as such an entity belonging to this same city administrative unit that has about 60,000 inhabitants.

The port is located 7 km from the city center Machalas the Gulf of Guayaquil on the Pacific coast. He is one of the most important shipping ports for bananas target Europe. Approximately 80 % of Ecuador's banana production is shipped here.

History

1883 advised the Ecuadorian government officially the Puerto Huaylá and later named after independence fighter Simon Bolivar.

Since 1900, this was connected by a railway line with Machala and Pasajes. Despite repeated efforts, however, failed the connection of the railway line on the route Guayaquil / Quito - Durán.

On July 27, 1941, the port was taken in the Peruvian- Ecuadorian War of Peruvian paratroopers. This was the first time that were used in the Western Hemisphere paratroopers.
