In the 1950s, the cinder cone of the island have been extensively mined in order to serve as a filler for the nearby Auckland Airport. The fiduciary organization that owns the wooded island today, has designed a plan under which the old form of the island is to be made using post-treated sludge of wastewater treatment plant in Mangere again. This process could take up to 35 years. The aim is that the island will become a park for the Auckland region.

On the island there was in the past centuries several Pā ( fortifications Māori ), but these were abandoned at the time of arrival of European settlers in the area.
