Puńsk

Puńsk ( Lithuanian Punskas ) is a village in Poland with around 1,000 inhabitants and capital of the homonymous country church that is bilingual since 2006 (Polish and Lithuanian). The town is located 23 km north-east of Suwalki on the border with Lithuania and belongs to the powiat Sejneński to.

History

Today Puńsk belongs to the majority of Lithuanians inhabited area in Poland. In the last Polish census of 2002, 74.9 % of the community population known to Lithuanian nationality. The place has the sole Lithuanian school in the country, is officially bilingual since 2006 and led a 2008 bilingual place names. A biweekly local paper " Aušra " appears. The city is also the center of the Lithuanian folk culture as well as economic exchange between the two countries. There are three museums, one of them the Lithuanian open-air museum.
