Storage of radioactive waste

In December 1976, here is a near-surface repository for low and intermediate level radioactive waste that does not originate from nuclear power plants were put into operation. The waste from an old warehouse in Solymár were brought to Püspökszilágy. It is operated by the German company DBE Technology GmbH in Peine.

The repository in Püspökszilágy, which has a capacity of 5000 cubic meters, was built in argillaceous Quaternary deposits. The storage capacity is already largely exhausted. It has storage compartments. At times, from 1988 to 1996, there also nuclear power plant waste was emplaced. Today, the waste from the Paks Nuclear Power Plant will be stored on the power station site to a separate repository is available for this purpose. This is also needed because the repository can not be extended.

For more low-and intermediate -level radioactive waste was started in Bátaapáti in 2007 with the construction of a repository.

A few years ago the Hungarian safety authority has ordered the retrievability of the waste. Since the waste is no longer fixed with cement. The system only serves as a temporary storage.
