Pyroderces

Pyroderces is a genus of butterflies of the family splendor butterfly ( Cosmopterigidae ).

Features

The head is slightly stretched forward. The eyes are pigmented red. The labial palps are long, curved and scaly. The fore wings are narrow and lanceolate. The apex is elongated and tapers to. The forewings have a yellowish to reddish ground color and are more or less clearly marked with bands or spots. The hind wings are very narrow and elongated.

In the males, the Tegumen is broad, slightly curved and dorsally provided with a reinforcing ridge. The right half is larger than the left. The Brachia are well sclerotized and slightly curved. The right brachium is about one and a half times as long as the left. The Valven are simple, spatulate to long and narrow. The Valvellae are strongly asymmetric. The left Valve is long and slender, the right is formed only rudimentary or missing entirely. The aedeagus is very short. It tapers distally, the back he has a sclerotized ring, which is often a flange. The Manica is very long, tapering distally and often has a curved tip. Biology

The caterpillars live in the flower baskets of Compositae (Asteraceae). There they eat the seeds or prey on other insects.
