Pyrrhias of Aetolia

Pyrrhias of Aetolia (Greek Πυρρίας ) was a ätolischer General.

He was sent by his countrymen during the Social War ( 220-217 BC) to Elis, there to take command. Here he pulled out of the advantage of the absence of Philip V of Macedon and the inability of the Achaean Strategos Eperatos the possibility of frequent raids to commit to the achaiische territory. After he had established a fortified position on the mountain Panachaikon, he ravaged the country to Rhion and Aigion.

In the next year ( 217 BC ) was planning Pyrrhias with Lycurgus, king of Sparta, an invasion of Messenia. However, he failed in the execution of his plan, since he was already beaten, Kyparissia before he could unite his forces with those of Lycurgus. After his return to Elis, he was recalled by the Aetolians, as the Eleians were unhappy with his behavior. He was replaced by Euripidas.

209 BC Pyrrhias received the office of the strategos of the Aetolians, and in the same year this office was also named honorary title of Attalus I, king of Pergamon awarded. In the spring of this year Pyrrhias advanced with an army to Lamia to prevent the breakthrough of Philip V of Macedon to the Peloponnese. Despite military support by both Attalus and Sulpicius Galba Roman praetor Publius Maximus, he was defeated by Philip in two successive battles. He then had to barricade themselves inside the walls of Lamia. 200 BC he led an Aetolian embassy, which met in Heraclea with Attalus and the Roman legate Lucius Apustius for consultations against Philip V..
