Quadrathlon

Quadrathlon referred to the sporty four-way battle of swimming, biking, canoeing and skiing. Sometimes also referred to as the sport Quadriathlon. In Quadrathlon four different distances be completed.

Allied sport next to the triathlon and duathlon is the canoe triathlon, a combination of running, cycling and paddling. First Canoe More fights already existed in the 1930s. In the German Federal Association for Quadrathlon ( QUAD ) also the Hydrathlon is run as (associated ) sport. The combination of sport consists of: Swimming - Running - kayak. He is - in contrast to triathlon and canoe - triathlon - with two water - disciplines " water Dominant ".

Quadrathlon offers the ambitious multisport athletes the advantage of a balanced ratio with respect to the stress of the upper and lower body. A good stamina, strength and technique are required for a match to be completed with success. This sport is particularly interesting for triathletes and kayakers from which both the majority of Quadrathleten recruited. But also versatile recreational athletes see in Quadrathlon the opportunity for a balanced all-around.

History

The first Quadrathlon was launched in 1989 by the Italian Sergio Ferrero on Ibiza from this life. It was the Diamond Man Long -distance Quadrathlon over 5 km swim, 20 km kayaking, 100 km cycling and 21.1 km running.

Sergio Ferrero made sure that spreads the Quadrathlon in Europe. So the WQF (World Quadrathlon Federation) and the EQF (European Federation Quadrathlon ) with the participation of the Czech Václav Marek was established in 1992.

Competitions

The World Association WQF organizes World Championships and a World Cup in Quadrathlon. Since 2006 in Germany a national series, the Germany Cup.

The WQF distinguishes the following standard distances:

( The Ultra Distance is rarely aligned and no WQF standard distance)

Since Quadrathlon is an outdoor sport that competition distances can fluctuate due to landscape requirements (especially at nationals in coordination with the competent organizations ). 7km K - - 50km R - For example, in Sedlcanydie short - Cup 2007 officially with distances of 1.5 km south 10km L was discharged. For this reason, there is a meaningful way, no world records ( personal bests Sprint, short or long distance), but at best track records.

Conception

The four disciplines of Quadrathlons are a combination of disciplines that need to be exercised without assistance or use of route benefits ( individual competition, individual sport ). They are combined so that a balanced endurance event is guaranteed, ie uniform requirements are necessary to the respective sections and are performed consecutively without stopping.

Quadrathlon arose from the claim to combine two disciplines of water and two country disciplines into a demanding endurance -around. You could ergo guided by rational- physiological criteria:

Quadrathlon has the sport formative ' discipline symmetric distribution:

  • - .................................. 2x 2x water ↔ country
  • - ......... 2x upper body / arm dynamic ↔ 2x lower body / leg dynamics
  • - ...... 2x technical / equipment discipline ↔ 2x "naked" discipline

The analysis of the relative speeds of the athlete shows a high balance between the individual disciplines: canoeing and cycling are approximately at three times the speed graduated as the analogous "naked" disciplines: Sun is an average reference Quadrathlet kayak 9km / h and while swimming about 3km / h, or when cycling time trial he reached roughly 30km / h and running at a speed of about 10km / h With a top sports Quadrathlet the speeds are correspondingly approximately 4 km / h and 40km / h, 12km / h and 15km / h, a leisure active grassroots Quadrathlet reaches about tempos of 2 km / h and 20 km / h, 6km / h and 7 km / h

At the same time the physical stress is in proportion inverse proportion to the speed - In other words, requires a speed of 10km / h on the bike is only about 1/3 of energy consumption compared to a run at 10 km / h and similarly this is for kayak / swimming can be stated or is the energy used to achieve a pace of 9 km / h while paddling around the 3 km / swimming similar (analog wheel / running ).

For completion of the respective individual distances of the respective disciplines / competition sections ( here the example of the Quadrathlon Long Distance ) this means for the respective periods:

Long-distance swimming 1-1.5 hours (= h) single time trial bike 2.5-3.5 h kayak regatta 2-3 h long-distance running 1.5-2 h

More generally: 1 swimming ZE ZE 3 Wheel 3 ZE kayak ' ZE 1 run ( ZE = time unit).

In comparison, a Triathlon-Ultra-/Langdistanz end time is calculated as the addition of only 1 ZE swimming, but formulated 5-6 4-5 ZE ZE Cycling and Running ( Sarcastically, the Ultra Distance Triathlon / Ironman is therefore a " wet - duel ").

The appeal of Quadrathlons generated total by the need to ' uniform mastery of all disciplines '.

Regulate

The competition rules of the German Quadrathlons are amongst others the rules of the WQF (World Quadrathlon Federation), DKV ( German Canoe Association ) and DTU ( German Triathlon Union ) and the single discipline associations (UCI, BDR, DLV, etc ).

Stagger

In many Quadrathlonveranstaltungen also " Quadrathlon squadrons " are offered. These are usually not at scales of several Quadrathlons, but multi- discipline squadrons in order of Quadrathlons. Pro Season participant succession ever completed a discipline of Quadrathlons ( analogy of " Distance Relay " or " decathlon Season "). More combat squadrons " Quadrathlon " can thus consist of pure specialists. Often one then compares the time difference between specialists squadrons and the Quadrathleten.

Some operators also offer (individual ) Fun squadrons, can compete in the approximately two-person teams, for example, Paddling in the double kayak and cycling in tandem. "Real" Quadrathlon squadrons as they are tentatively in triathlon were then compared not yet been performed. Instead i.d.R. Team results from the sum of the individual times of Quadrathleten formed who have completed simultaneously the competition ( national teams, club teams, open teams, mixed teams).

Associations

  • WQF (World Quadrathlon Federation)
  • EQF (European Federation Quadrathlon )
  • QUAD ( Quadrathlon Alliance Germany )
  • DKV ( German Canoe Association )

Currently has ten national associations of WQF: Canada, Germany, France, Great Britain, Mexico, Poland, Slovakia, Spain, Czech Republic and Hungary.
