Quercus (organization)

Quercus, Associação Nacional de da Natureza of Conservation, is a Portuguese non-governmental organization in the field of environmental protection.

The non-profit, politically independent organization was founded on 31 October 1985 in the city of Braga. The name Quercus was chosen in memory of the Latin name for Portugal threatened in their existence oaks, holm oaks and cork oaks.

Objectives and principles, inter alia, the rejection of genetically modified foods and the use of nuclear energy, waste reduction, creating an awareness of resource conservation and pollution of drinking water and the sustainable development of alternative energies.

Quercus feels committed to democratic principles and is decentralized. The headquarters is located in Lisbon, outlines are for example also in the Azores and Madeira. On the latter island was after the flood disaster of February 2010, the criticism of the Quercus - speaker Hélder Spínola of Civil and Environmental sins international attention. Since 2007, Quercus TV exists the production and distribution of videos in the subject area of the organization.
