Quinquatria

The Quinquatrus, later also Quinquatria were two festivals of ancient Roman religion.

The actual Quinquatrus ( named for distinction also Quinquatrus maiores ) (hence probably the name) took place on the fifth day after the Ides of March takes place, which corresponds to the 19 March. The festival was later extended inter alia, for the holding of gladiator fights, five days until March 23. Originally it was probably a festival in honor of the war god Mars, since in addition to Salii, the priests of Mars, also Tribune of the Roman army took part as well as the arma ancilia were symbolically cleaned in preparation for future military actions. In later times the Quinquatrus were above all a feast for the goddess Minerva to celebrate her birthday and the foundation of her temple on the Aventine Hill.

The " smaller Quinquatrus " ( Quinquatrus minusculae ) took place on 13 to 15 June. On them moved flute player ( tibicines ) through the town to the Temple of Minerva. They were also hosted in the temple of Jupiter on the Capitol. In imperial times, especially the standing also under the protection of Minerva teachers celebrated the festival. What relationship existed with the Quinquatrus in March, is not clear.
