Quirites

Quirites (Latin Quirites; plural) was a solemn and poetic name for the citizens of ancient Rome and is synonymous with the later designation cives Romani ( " Roman citizens "). The singular form Quiris occurred only in poetic language. The official name was Populus Romanus Quirites (later also Quiritium ), ie literally " Roman people of the Quirites ".

Quirites probably derives from the name of the god Quirinus from, which was identified with the city's founder, Romulus. Originally Quirites were probably only the Sabine residents of the Hill Quirinal, before the term was applied to all Romans. The word is also brought into connection with the Sabine town of Cures, the Sabine name curis for " lance ", a derivative of co - virites ( " all men ", " entire citizenry " ) or the ancient Roman curiae.

" Quirites " is also the title of which was founded by Theodor Eschenburg 1928 discussion circle.
