Qurghonteppa

Qurghonteppa, ( Tajik: Қурғонтеппа ) formerly known as Kurgan - Tyube ( from the Persian word گرگان تپه, which means as much as "Mountains of Gurgan " ), is a city in southwestern Tajikistan.

Geography

It is the capital of Khatlon region and is situated on the banks of the river Vakhsh.

Population

With a population of about 85,000 people Qurghonteppa is the fourth largest city of Tajikistan.

Economy

Economically important are for the city banks, telecommunications companies and the cultivation of cotton. Many residents commute to work in Russia. The city has an airport, the airport Qurghonteppa exist from which connections to Russia, Kazakhstan and within Tajikistan.

Sports

In football, the city is represented by the association Vakhsh Qurghonteppa.
