RadynÄ› Castle

The castle Radyně ( briefly also Karlskrone ) rises on the mountain Radyně ( 586 m) between Pilsen and Stary Plzenec, Czech Republic. It is even visible from a great distance.

The castle was built along with the castle Kašperk in Šumava founded in 1356 by Charles IV and should serve as a seat of royal administrator of the region. Both castles were completed in 1361. Kašperk was built by the builder Vít Hedvábný and owing to the structural similarity of his involvement is likely even at Radyně. The castle was named after Karl Karl crown, a few years after his death, however predominates again the name of the mountain - Radyně. The castle was intended to replace the older early medieval Pilsener administrative center ( Stary Plzenec ). With the rise of the newly founded city ( New) Pilsen, however, the castle gradually lost its importance.

During the siege of Pilsen by the Hussites, in cooperation with the defector and former captain of the encampments Přibík of Klenová in spring 1434 of the castle from the besieged city with food supplies (supposedly in a total of 120 cars ). In the mid-16th century Radyně is already mentioned as desolate.

The installation of the castle consists of an elongated Palas at each end of which rests a tower. This basic concept is the same for the probably slightly older Kašperk castle. At the western end is adjacent to a small courtyard with farm buildings and a cistern.

The castle is open to visitors, the western preserved tower offers a magnificent view. The ruin is a typical dominant around Pilsen.
