Rafael Alkorta

Rafael Alkorta Martínez ( born September 16, 1968 in Bilbao ) is a former Spanish footballer.

Career

The central defender Rafael Alkorta began as a ten year old for his longtime club Athletic Bilbao to the football game. As early as 1985 he became a professional player here, but was only on October 24, 1987 his debut in the Primera División. After 172 first division matches for Bilbao 1993, he moved to Real Madrid, where he formed a dynamic duo in central defense along with Fernando Hierro. In 1997 he returned to Athletic Bilbao and played there until 2002, before he ended his career. Rafael Alkorta was considered a die-hard man-marker, similar to Germany Jürgen Kohler.

For the Spanish national football team, he brought it on 54 missions and participated in four major tournaments: 1990 World Cup in Italy, the 1994 World Cup in the USA, Euro 1996 in England and 1998 World Cup in France.
