Rafael Yglesias Castro

Rafael Yglesias Castro ( born April 18, 1861 in San Jose, † April 11, 1924 ibid ) was between May 8, 1894 and May 8, 1902 President of Costa Rica.

Life

His parents were Eudoxia Castro Fernández, the daughter of José María Castro Madriz and Demetrio Yglesias Llorente. His sister married WH Lynn, his brothers Carlos and Ricardo. He studied law at the Universidad de Santo Tomás. On January 7, 1893 Manuela Castro Rodríguez Alvarado married the daughter of José Joaquín Rodríguez Zeledon.

In November 1889 he was ringleader in the rebellion of the Partido Constitucional [ wp 1], which brought his father José Joaquín Rodríguez Zeledon to the presidency. During the presidency of his father- he was Minister of War and Navy.

Presidency

In the first round of the presidential elections in 1894 the candidate of Unión Católica [ wp 2] José Gregorio Gutiérrez Trejo had received more votes. Rafael Yglesias Castro was candidate of the Partido Civil [ wp 3] President. He opened the Teatro Nacional, leaving in 1897 to amend the constitution to govern another term can. In the presidential elections on 12 December 1897, he was the only candidate approved.

Yglesias end of 1898 began a six-month trip abroad. He attended William McKinley, and West Point. The Ambassador of Costa Rica in the United States was Joaquín Bernardo Calvo Mora [ wp 4], the Consul General of Costa Rica in the United States was Dr. Juan J. Ulloa. On January 9, 1899, he was in Folkestone by Robert Follet Synge CMG received by the British Treasury. On January 12, 1899, he had a conversation with the U.S. ambassador in London, Henry White [ wp 5 ], and then the British Foreign Office.

1900, the gold standard for the creation of money for the Costa Rican Colon was introduced.

1909 and 1913 he was a presidential candidate. In 1917, he participated in a panel of former presidents, which designed a constitution. In 1919 he became Plenipotentiary of the Government of Costa Rica, Guatemala.
