Raffaello da Montelupo

Raffaello da Montelupo (* 1505 in Montelupo Fiorentino, near Florence, † 1566 in Orvieto, born Raffaele Sinibaldi ) was an Italian sculptor and architect.

Life

Montelupo trained by his father Baccio da Montelupo and worked in Rome ( 1524-27 ), which he left after the sack. He appeared in Loreto ( 1530-33 ) and Florence, where he executed his masterpiece, the statue of St. Damian in the Basilica di San Lorenzo di Firenze, after a design by Michelangelo. He returned to Rome ( 1543-52 ) and was elected mayor of Castel Sant'Angelo. Later, he oversaw the work on the Cathedral of Orvieto.
