Ragnhildur Helgadóttir

Ragnhildur Helgadóttir ( born May 26, 1930 in Reykjavík ) is a former Icelandic politician of the Independence Party ( Sjálfstæðisflokkur ), which was from 1961 to 1962 first president of the Lower House of the Althing. She was also the only female president of the lower house.

Biography

Ragnhildur Helgadóttir, daughter of the doctor and long -time chairman of the Boy Scouts Association Bandalag íslenskra Skata Helgi Tómasson, in 1956 elected as a candidate of the Independence Party for Members of the Lower House of the Althing and was this first in 1963, where she was the only female MPs 1956-1959. During this time she was initially 1959 2nd Vice President of the Althing, then from 1959 to 1960 2nd Vice President of the Lower House, and from 1961 to 1962 the first President of the Lower House. Then she was 1962-1963 again 2nd Vice President of the Lower House.

In 1971, she was again deputy of the lower house and belonged to the second chamber of the Althing at this time until 1979. During this time she was 1974-1978, not only once again president of the lower house, but at the same time in 1975 and President of the Nordic Council.

Last 1983 she was deputy of the lower house and was the Member to the parliamentary reform in 1991, which led to the current bicameral system was abolished.

In May 1983, she was appointed by Prime Minister Steingrímur Hemm to the Education Minister in his government. After formation of a government they belonged whose government in 1985 as Minister of Health, Social Affairs and Communications until July 1987.
