Rantau (island)

Rantau ( indonesian Pulau Rantau, also Tebingtinggi or Tebing Tinggi ) is an Indonesian island off the east coast of Sumatra, located in the Strait of Malacca.

Geography

With an area of ​​1597.5 km ², it is the largest of a series of lying off the east coast of Sumatra islands, each width by a few kilometers estuaries are separated. In the south of the island of Sumatra, in the northeast Rank Sang, in the north Merbau and to the northwest of Padang. From Merbau Rantau is separated by a mere 100 meters wide and 14.3 km long estuary, which Merbau not appear on many maps as a separate island. Rantau 76 km long, up to 26 km wide and consistently flat.

To the east lie directly in front of Rantau the two small islands Menggung and Topang, in the southeast Serapung and Labu.

Management

Administratively, the island is part of the Rantau government district ( kabupaten ) Kepulauan Meranti Riau province and consists of the two sub-districts ( Kecamatan ) Tebing Tinggi and Tebing Tinggi Barat together 91 889 inhabitants (as of 2007). The biggest and most important place is Selat Panjang on the north coast of the island.
