Raphael Christen

Raphael Christen ( * July 16, 1811 in Basel, † January 14, 1880 in Bern ) was a Swiss sculptor.

He was the son of the sculptor Joseph Maria Christian. Karl Viktor von Bonstetten allowed him to stay in Rome, where he was trained by Bertel Thorvaldsen. After that, he was a short time teacher at the woodcarver school in Brienz and finally settled down in Bern. He created numerous busts, among others, 1847 by Guillaume -Henri Dufour and around 1848 by Friedrich Frey- Herosé. His most important works include four statues on the facade of the Swiss National Bank, two round medallions at the Kunstmuseum Bern and the figure of Berna fountain.
