ratDVD

RatDVD is the name of a video DVD copying software for Windows operating systems that is able to generate image and Tonkopien video DVDs in a space-saving container format. The program is proprietary, but free (freeware ).

A copy created with RatDVD is, according to the programmer usually between 1 and 2 GB in size. If only the main movie to copy, then file sizes give the 750 MB. To be placed on maximum compression value, can be 90-minute feature films to 200 to 300 MB of squeezing. The quality is then correspondingly low; for playback on small screens, but not (yet) sufficiently. In addition, the generated file can be used as a basis for the restoration on DVD /-R (W), although a different assessed quality loss. The extent of quality loss depends on the initial compression setting.

It is possible to convert a compressed RatDVD file back to DVD-Video files.

For the compression of the video material is its own compression format, which XEB codec used. Existing LPCM and AC3 5.1 material is transcoded to AC3 Virtual Surround. Audio tracks in DTS format RatDVD removed automatically by default.

RatDVD is optimized to copy movie DVDs completely. The user has the ability to selectively remove components and so in addition to save space. In addition, it is possible to make custom settings for transcoding video and audio material. Copy-protected DVDs with CSS can not use RatDVD itself.

The last version of the program comes from the December 2005.

According to information from Heise RatDVD was extended by the German copy protection specialists ACE GmbH FluxDVD and is used for the download and flammable DVD format by T-Online.

Information about the codec XEB

This codec is the result of an experimental project. Care was taken not code from other codecs such as Xvid or x264. The properties of this codec are:

  • Block -based ( no wavelet method ).
  • Dynamic GOP structure (with P-frames only one reference frame, and B-frames have two references ).
  • GOPs are significantly longer than MPEG -2, and always self-contained (closed GOP). To prevent deviations ( drift) in long GOPs, an intra -refresh algorithm is used.
  • Intra- estimation is better than MPEG -2, but not so flexible as in H.264. For the Discrete Cosine Transform Integer (Integer) transformations are used.
  • It is used a block- related, linear and adaptive Quantisiermodell. Here, the quantum value for each macroblock by a psycho- visual model is determined.
  • There is a blur to prevent blocking.
  • The mode selection ( intra / inter ) is part of a Lagrange optimization, based on a statistical optimization.
  • Different internal scales can be used in both directions per GOP. There are some limitations for the codec, which result from the maintenance of the DVD navigation.
  • The main advantage of this codec is its ability to maintain the complete DVD navigation to again generate complete DVDs.

Criticism

  • RatDVD has the option, both GPL modules with which it is delivered, not to install; playing RatDVD files works but then not. RatDVD used apparently libdvdnav for playing, which is released under the GPL license. The GPL states: Linking ABC statically or dynamically with other modules is making a combined work based on ABC. Malthus, the terms and conditions of the GNU General Public License cover the whole combination. ( In short, if a program A is linked statically or dynamically to module B, and module B is under the GPL, also A program must be under the GPL ). The source code of RatDVD but is kept secret by the authors, which is a violation of the GPL.

For this purpose, the author of the program: " RatDVD Itself does not relate in any way to GPL and is currently not open / shared source When I release it as open source sometime in the future this will probably happen under the BSD license since this does not. impose as many restrictions on the users as GPL does.
