Raúl Prebisch

Raúl Prebisch ( born April 17, 1901 in San Miguel de Tucumán, † April 29, 1986 in Santiago de Chile) was an Argentine economist development.

Life

Prebisch's father was a German immigrant who originally came from Colmnitz in Saxony.

Prebisch's name is closely associated with the development of the theory of secular deterioration in the terms of trade ( Prebisch -Singer thesis ) and the structuralist economic policy.

He was from 1935 to 1943 director of the Argentine Central Bank. From 1949 to 1963 he was Director of the Economic Commission for Latin America and the Caribbean of the United Nations ( Comisión Económica para América Latina y el Caribe ) and 1964-1969 Secretary-General of UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development).

Awards

1977 Prebisch received the Dag Hammarskjöld Medal of Honor of the German Society for the United Nations.
