Ray Perrault

Raymond " Ray" Joseph Perrault PC ( born February 6, 1926 in Vancouver, British Columbia, † 24 November 2008) was a Canadian communications consultant, and politician of the Liberal Party, representing the interests of British Columbia, both in the House and the Senate.

Life

After schooling Perrault graduated and was after his graduation with a Bachelor of Arts ( BA), a communications consultant.

His political career began in 1959 when he became Chairman of the Liberal Party of British Columbia and he remained in this position until 1968. At the same time he was from September 1960 to 1968 Member of the Legislative Assembly of British Columbia.

Perrault was elected as a candidate of the Liberal Party in the general election of 25 June 1968 constituency Burnaby - Seymour as a member of the House of Commons, although he lost this mandate already in the subsequent general election on October 30, 1972 again. During this time he was from October 1970 to February 1972 First Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Employment and thereafter until September 1972 to the Minister of Manpower and Immigration.

In October 1973, Perrault was appointed on the recommendation of Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau to the Senator for British Columbia, where he held until February 2001 the Senate District North Shore Burnaby represented there.

During his long Senate membership at first he was from August 1974 to June 1979 leaders of the Group of the government majority in the Senate and as such also a member of the 20th Federal Cabinet headed by Prime Minister Pierre Trudeau. After the election defeat by the Progressive Conservative Party of Canada he was from May to December 1979 Leader of the Opposition in the Senate before he was leader of the government majority in the Senate again between March 1980 and September 1982.

During this time he was also from February 1981 to August 1982 Regional Minister for British Columbia in the led by Prime Minister Trudeau 22 federal cabinet. After a cabinet reshuffle, he was most recently between September 1982 and August 1983 Minister of State for Fitness and Amateur Sport.
