Raymundo Damasceno Assis

Cardinal Raymundo Damasceno Assis ( * February 15, 1937 in Nova Capela, Brazil) is Archbishop of Aparecida.

Life

1955 Damasceno Assis entered the seminary of Mariana. He began in 1961 a study of Catholic theology at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, where he graduated with a PhD. 1965 Raymundo Damasceno Assis went to Munich to specialize further in specialized catechesis.

On March 19, 1968 Damasceno Assis received the sacrament of Holy Orders. He worked in the Seminary and the University of Brasília office, before he was appointed Vicar General of the Archdiocese of Brasília. Pope Paul VI. conferred him on August 18, 1970 the title of Chaplain of His Holiness.

Pope John Paul II appointed him Titular Bishop of Nova Petra Raymundo Damasceno Assis and ordered on 18 June 1986 as Auxiliary Bishop in Brasília. The episcopal ordination took place on 15 September of the same year by José Freire Falcão Cardinal. From 1995 to 2003 Raymundo Damasceno Assis was also Secretary General of the Brazilian Bishops' Conference. On 28 January 2004, John Paul II appointed him archbishop of Aparecida. This took office Damasceno Assis on 25 March of the same year.

Archbishop Raymundo Damasceno Assis is a member of the Pontifical Council for Social Communications. Since 2007 he has been President of CELAM. Raymundo Damasceno Assis was on 23 September 2009 by Pope Benedict XVI. appointed a member of the Second Special Assembly of the Synod of Bishops for Africa ( 4 to 25 October 2009). On 8 October 2009, he was appointed member of the Pontifical Commission for Latin America.

In solemn consistory of November 20, 2010 Pope Benedict XVI took him. as cardinal priest with the titular church of Immacolata al Tiburtino in the College of Cardinals.
