Rayner Goddard, Baron Goddard

Rayner Goddard, Baron Goddard, KC ( born April 10, 1877 in London, † May 29, 1971 London ) was a British lawyer, who was known for his harsh sentences and his conservative attitude. His nickname was "Tiger" and "Justice - in-a- jiffy " (judgment in no time ). In 1957 he refused to six appointments in an hour.

Life

Goddard attended Marlborough College and later at Trinity College, Oxford. He made his law degree in 1898 and a year later was admitted to the bar.

On 31 May 1906 he married Marie Schuster, daughter of the banker Sir Felix Otto Schuster, and had with her three children. She died on May 16, 1928 during an operation at the age of 44 years.

In 1923 he was appointed Attorney-General. On April 5, 1932, he was appointed judge of the King's Bench Division ordered the High Court of England and Wales and knighted the following year. In 1944 he became a Life Peer as Baron Goddard, of Aldbourne in the County of Wiltshire, raised. In January 1946 he was appointed Lord Chief Justice of England and Wales and held this office until August 1958.

Goddard died at his home in London on 29 May 1971.
