Reactive lymphocyte

Reactive lymphocytes are lymphocytes that are larger due to antigen stimulation. Typically, they can have more than 30 microns in diameter, as well as different sizes and shapes.

The nuclei of a reactive lymphocyte can be round, elliptical, indented, cleft or folded. Cytoplasm is often abundant and may be basophilic. Vacuoles and / or azurophilische granules are also sometimes available. In most cases, the cytoplasm know on a gray, light blue or deep blue color.

The distinctive cell in connection with EBV or CMV is known as " Downey cell". It was named after Hal Downey, who in 1923 contributed to the characterization. It is sometimes erroneously referred to as " Downy cell".

Causes

Reactive lymphocytes usually hang together with viral diseases, but can also as a result of drug reactions ( such as phenytoin ), vaccinations, radiation, hormonal causes (such as stress and Addison 's disease ), and some autoimmune diseases occur ( eg rheumatoid arthritis).
