Reading is a city in Berks County in the U.S. state of Pennsylvania with 88 082 inhabitants ( 2010). The city was founded in 1748 and is the administrative headquarters ( County Seat) of Berks County. Reading was the seat of the railway company Reading Railroad, which began operations in 1833.

Geography

Reading is located in southeastern Pennsylvania, about 93 km northwest of the city of Philadelphia. The city is largely bounded on the west by the Schuylkill River, on the east by Mount Penn and to the south by Neversink Mountain. The Reading Prong, a rock formation that extends into northern New Jersey, is associated with a natural occurrence of the radioactive noble gas radon, but the households in Reading are not particularly affected them.

The city of Reading and its surroundings are served by the Reading Regional Airport ( IATA code RDG ) to the air traffic. Commercial scheduled flights to Reading were discontinued in 2004 as Reading not far from the airports Harrisburg International Airport, Lehigh Valley International Airport and Philadelphia International Airport is located.
