Real 3D

Real 3D, Inc. was founded in January 1996 by Lockheed Martin and was a company that dealt with the development of 3D technology. Headquarters was in Orlando (Florida ) / USA. Owners were Lockheed Martin (70 % share), Intel (20 % share) and Silicon Graphics (10 % share).

History

The roots of Real 3D go back to the Apollo program NASA, for which General Electric developed a simulator for the moon landing. This graphics technology from General Electric was later licensed by Lockheed Martin and passed on to Real 3D. These patents were also the reason for a patent lawsuit against ATI in 1999.

On 21 October 1999 finally gave Lockheed Martin the sale of real 3D on Intel known. As a result, Intel laid in 2001 when the dispute with ATI Technologies, which led to a cross-license agreement between the two companies: ATI so got a license for chipsets with Intel Intel bus protocols and access to graphics technology from ATI. Back in 2000 you had with 3dfx also signed a cross-license agreement. Thanks to Real 3D Intel has thus get access to extensive graphics patents.

Products

Real 3D was especially known for its 3D graphics, which came in 1996 in arcade systems Sega Model 1 and Model 2 Sega Sega used. Of these, over 300,000 units have been sold.
