Red Lake (Croatia)

At about 50 m fluctuating water levels

The Red Sea ( Croatian Crveno Jezero ) is one of the largest water-filled sinkholes in the world. It is located about 1.5 km west of the town Imotski in Croatia. Its age is estimated at two million years.

The nearly circular lake has on the water surface has a diameter of about 200 meters. Its depth is around 287 meters, the height of the water level fluctuates seasonally by 30 to 50 meters. The reddish color of the rock wall, reaching up to 250 meters vertically above the water surface, the lake is named. The water itself is deep blue.

A diving expedition discovered in the summer of 1998, in 15 meters deep an entrance to a cave branched system with air-filled cavities, which has a second entrance in the cliff above the water level and leads to a further, but much smaller lake. In 170 meters depth has been demonstrated with the help of a diving robot, a large inflow into the lake. The expedition also carried out an inventory of the flora and fauna of the Red Sea, where, among other endemic fish were found.

In about one kilometer away is the Blue Lake (Croatian Modro Jezero ), another remarkable collapse doline.
