Red Mosque, Berat

The Red Mosque (Albanian Xhamia e Kuqe ) is a ruined mosque in the city of Berat Castle in southern Albania.

The mosque was built in the 15th century and was one of the oldest mosques in the country. It was probably built soon after the conquest of Berat by the Ottomans in 1417. The oldest written record dates from 1431/32. The original name was the ruler Mosque and Mosque of conquest.

The mosque is located just outside the citadel within the inhabited castle. The mosque served in the early days of the soldiers in the citadel. Later, under the castle hill was a new Ottoman town with several mosques and inside the citadel, the White Mosque was built. The Red Mosque was therefore no longer needed and disintegrated, as Evliya Çelebi reported mid-17th century.

The basic dimensions were 9.9 to 9.1 meters, also there was a design with wooden roof. The minaret is unusually left of the entrance. From the minaret of a few meters are still preserved up high to the gallery. It consists of layers with light limestone and red brick. From the building only about one meter high foundation walls are otherwise left.

The Red Mosque was declared in 1961 under the dictator Enver Hoxha as a cultural monument.
