Red Sea bannerfish

Rotmeer Pennant (Heniochus intermedius )

The Red Sea Pennant (Heniochus intermedius ) is a species of the family of butterfly fish. It occurs in the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden and lives in coral reefs to depths of 50 meters.

Features

The Red Sea banner fish reaches a length of up to 18 cm. The fish has a yellow-white, high-backed and laterally strongly flattened body. Characteristic of him are the solid to a long, white banner front part of the dorsal fin and the two black horizontal stripes. Pectoral fins, caudal fin, anal fin, the rear weichstrahlige part of the dorsal fin and the lower sides of the body are yellow.

Way of life

Grown Red Sea banner fish always live near the coast and linked to coral reefs (in contrast to Heniochus diphreutes ) alone, in pairs or in small groups. Young fish live in large groups, sometimes together with the flock Pennant (Heniochus diphreutes ). They feed on zooplankton and bottom-dwelling invertebrates.
