Redwood Castle

Redwood Castle ( also Egan Castle, Irish Caisleán Choillte Rua ) is a castle in Lorrha, County Tipperary, Republic of Ireland.

History of the castle

The Anglo - Normans built the plant in 1200 and remained so until about 1350 in possession until the Egan ( Irish: Mac Aodhagáin ) took control of the region.

The Clan of the Egans founded a school over which the family for several hundred years held the patronage.

Redwood Castle was enlarged several times and rebuilt, with the most notable works in the years 1350 and 1580 were held. The thick stone walls of the fortress show some typical features of the Irish castle building this period, we find in this example, a Sheela Na Gig.

The castle remained under rule of the Egans and O'Kennedys until it was razed and confiscated during the conquest of Ireland in 1650. The plant remained as a ruin; only the thick outer walls were left, until, in 1972 purchased by the private investor, Michael J. Egan and renovated.
