History

The roots

Looking at the history of Eastern Bavarian Technical University of Regensburg and its predecessor institutions so enough this far back. The chronicle refers to the year 1846 as the drawing-master Johann Doerner a private " Baugewerkschule " founded in 1868 which was eventually connected with the Royal Realschule. From the school of architecture has evolved over a number of stations in Regensburg - college for civil engineering, which had with the inauguration of a new building on the street Prüfening 1953 found their site where they could further expand the time being.

The Year 1958: Year of Johannes Kepler Polytechnic

The number of students at the building rose rapidly. In March 1958, the County Council decided to expand the Upper Palatinate Regensburg's architectural school at a polytechnic with the departments of Civil, structural, mechanical and electrical engineering. The Polytechnic should allow the young people of the region a close to home education as an engineer for a total counteract the lack of technical and management personnel in Eastern Bavaria. The aim was to provide an application- oriented education with faculty from practice. In the same year the county council of Regensburg School of Engineering the name " Johannes Kepler Polytechnic " awarded by a unanimous decision. 1961 was followed by another new building for the Department of Mechanical and Electrical Engineering with 55,000 cubic meters of enclosed space. The entire building complex was designed for 1,000 students at that time, 920 were already enrolled at this time. The Polytechnic was thus an important step for further development to today's University of Applied Sciences.

The University of Applied Sciences Regensburg

With the acquisition of the Polytechnic by the Free State of Bavaria in 1964, the ownership was transferred to the Free State. 1971 decided the Free State of Bavaria, the establishment of technical colleges as second type of higher education institutions other than universities. By merging the Johannes Kepler Polytechnic with the small and specialized engineering schools in Landshut, Selb and Zwiesel, with the Higher School of Economics Eastern Bavaria and by extension to the training towards social services finally did the Fachhochschule Regensburg. This also meant a considerable extension of the study to the subjects offer business administration and social work. The curriculum has gradually: In 1973, the computer science degree program was followed, in 1974, finally took Regensburg as the first and hitherto only university in Bavaria the teaching in mathematics on.

On the way to the campus

The stormy growth of students soon led to extreme spatial constraints. A first solution was distinguished due to a computational space surplus from among the already constructed buildings for the University of Regensburg. The University Construction was contracted to integrate the final training in economics, social services and essential parts of the training toward technology in corresponding re -build building of the University at the Seybothstraße. This laid the foundation for a common science campus was established with the University: the winter semester 1977/78 the Faculty of Social Welfare had moved into the Seybothstraße, in the winter semester 1983/84 was followed by the Faculty of Business Administration and a part of the Faculty of Electrical Engineering. 1985 for electrical engineering a new lecture hall built in 1987 then finally the associated laboratory building. 1988 moved into the faculties of General Studies and microsystems technology and computer science and mathematics most of the collection building at the university. Against the background of the further increase in student numbers and the overcrowding of Prüfening road fell In 1995, the final location decision: The entire college should be gradually shifted to the campus at the University Road. The implementation started with a new building for the Faculty of Engineering at the Galgenbergstraße that could be occupied in 2001. 2002, the new laboratory for microsystem technology was completed. In 2006, finally, both the new Central Library and the new canteen went into operation. With the lake in front of the university now has a central forum to which the outstanding other new buildings are grouped for the final relocation of Prüfening road and the additional expansion of the university. In 2011, the auditorium of the forum went into operation.

From the Fachhochschule Regensburg Regensburg OTH

The establishment of technical colleges as a separate type of college is since 1971 underway. This also applies to the OTH Regensburg. The core task is loud high school profile, a practice-oriented teaching, which is also constantly to substantiate scientifically the art and science. To this end, research is needed to receive the results of university basic research and seeks solutions to practical problems and those developed. Accordingly, the additional duty tasks of the " applied research " and scientific training are in the new Bavarian Higher Education Act of 2006 besides the core task of "teaching" for the colleges entered. The renaming of the college to the university of applied sciences should witness a consequence of this further scientific profiling.

On 1 October 2013, the renaming to Ostbayerisches Technische Hochschule Regensburg took place. The new title is the result of successful participation in the competition for the title of " Institute of Technology " under the Bavarian Universities of Applied Sciences, proclaimed by the Bavarian State Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts. The University of Regensburg had applied together with the Amberg-Weiden University under the " umbrella brand" Eastern Bavarian Institute of Technology for the title. The Eastern Bavarian Technical University of Regensburg is one of only five Bavarian universities, which must henceforth bear the title "Technical University" in their names.

The OTH Regensburg is one of 257 universities in Germany and 17 Universities of Applied Sciences (HAW ) in the Free State of Bavaria. She is one of the largest universities of applied sciences in Bavaria. The eight faculties are currently located in various locations: In the Prüfening road are the faculties of Architecture and Civil Engineering. At the Galgenbergstrasse the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering is located. In the Seybothstrasse are the faculties of General Studies and microsystems technology, business administration, electrical engineering and information technology as well as applied social sciences. The Faculty of computer science and mathematics is currently still housed in the collection building of the University of Regensburg.

The OTH Regensburg currently has 109 international academic contacts to universities and colleges in all continents.

Institute for Applied Research and Economic Cooperation ( IAFW )

On 1 October 2000, the " Institute for Applied Research and Economic Cooperation was held at the East Bavarian Technical University of Regensburg ( IAFW ) was founded. Central institution provides the IAFW the professional cross-sectoral umbrella organization for all research activities at the University of Regensburg dar. goal behind this university-wide means, it is, to bridge the gap between application-oriented science and industrial practice and allow as part of events co-operation with the business community to share knowledge and technology transfer. the company will not only get instant access to the latest findings and results, but they have targeted with specialists of the university the possibility of answers to obtain exchange of knowledge to solve practical problems. cooperation with the IAFW offers not only large companies, but also increasingly small and medium enterprises, which often have research and development to little or no capacity in the area, the opportunity to significantly increase their ability to innovate.

In particular, members of the university can receive advice on issues of national and international research funding and support during the application process and administrative management of cooperation projects. The collection and publication of research activities is also one of the tasks, such as combining research skills of OTH Regensburg. To make the wide range of research activities more transparent, under the umbrella of IAFW were established in the last two years, numerous centers of excellence (eg sensors, mechatronics, nanotechnology, IT security, software engineering, bioengineering, logistics). The cooperation with various regional and national networks is also a focus.

Center for Continuing Education and Knowledge Management ( ZWW )

Scientifically grounded vocational training is in addition to teaching and applied research, the third column in the services offered by the OTH Regensburg. It opens addressees from across the region the chance to lifelong education and helps to secure the qualification and competence resources for the entire region sustainable.
