Regino Sainz de la Maza

Regino Sainz de la Maza y Ruiz ( born September 7, 1898 in Burgos, † November 26, 1981 in Madrid) was a Spanish guitarist, composer and music educator.

Life

Sainz de la Maza got his first guitar at age 10. He was initially taught by Eugenio Rodríguez Pascual. In 1910 his family moved to San Sebastián, where he studied with Luis de Soria. In Bilbao, he was trained by Tárrega students Hilarión Leloup. Later he moved to Barcelona and became friends with Miguel Llobet and Andres Segovia. In Madrid he became a pupil of Daniel Fortea.

In 1920 he played for the first time in Madrid and spent a year after more than 90 concerts in South America. He was awarded by the Universidad de Buenos Aires a gold medal. His friend Antonio José composed for him and several concerts in France, Germany and the United Kingdom followed. In 1930 he married the daughter of the writer Concha Espina. In 1935 he became professor of guitar at the Madrid Conservatory. 1940 dedicated to him Joaquín Rodrigo Concierto de Aranjuez, which was awarded under César de Mendoza Lassalle. In the same year he again led to the work under Jesús Arámbarri.

In 1955 he published the book La Guitarra y su historia. In 1958 he became a member of the Real Academia de Bellas Artes de San Fernando. On May 24, 1958, he was named the city of Burgos honorary citizen. His brother, Eduardo Sainz de la Maza was also a guitarist.
