Regulus (Bayer designation: α Leonis ) is the brightest star ( main star ) in the constellation Leo. The Latin name means Little King or Prince. Regulus, together with the stars Arcturus and Spica the Spring triangle.

Regulus is 77.5 light years away from the Sun and has an apparent magnitude of 1.36 like at an absolute magnitude of -0.2 mag. He belongs to the spectral type B7.

Regulus is quite often the Moon and very rarely covered as ekliptiknaher star also of the planets Mercury and Venus. The last eclipse of Regulus by a planet took place on July 9, 1959 by Venus, the next will take place on October 1, 2044 again by Venus. Occultations of Regulus by other planets are due to their current web position not possible in the next few millennia. On March 20, 2014 Regulus will be covered by the asteroid (163 ) Erigone what will be, however, observed only in a narrow strip over the North Atlantic and North America ( among others but also of New York City ).
