Reinald IV, Duke of Guelders and Jülich

Rainald von Jülich (* 1365, † June 25, 1423 in Arnhem) was from 1402 Rainald IV Duke of funds and as Rainald I Duke of Jülich.

Life

Rainald was the son of William II, Duke of Jülich and Maria von Geldern, a subsidiary of Duke Rainald II of funds. He followed in 1402 his childless deceased older brother William as Duke of Jülich and Geldern. He allied himself in 1406 with the Wittelsbach Counts of Holland and Hainaut to prevent the succession Anton of Burgundy in the Duchy of Brabant, but this failed and resulted in a rupture of the alliance. He supported the election of Rupert I. Roman-German king and formed an alliance with Louis of Orléans. For the support of John of Arkel in the fight against the Netherlands he received in 1409 the town of Gorinchem, which he relinquished in 1412 but already back in exchange for financial compensation. He had to leave the Duke of Cleves Emmerich. The mounting debt forced him to renew the privileges of the estates and expand. After his death, childless, in 1423, succeeded him in Jülich Adolf Duke of Berg ( from a side branch of the House Jülich), while the Guelders stalls Arnold of Egmond, a grandson of Reynald's sister Joan, chose the duke.

Family

Rainald married in 1405 Maria ( † after 1427), a daughter of John VI. of Harcourt and Aumale. The marriage remained childless. The Book of Hours of his wife is preserved.

The duke had an illegitimate son named Reinart ( Bastard of Jülich), whom he married in 1410 with Alveradis, the daughter of the late Knight of rust Disternich.
