Reinhold Bertlmann

Reinhold A. Bertlmann (* 1945) is an Austrian physicist and professor at the University of Vienna. He became known through the comparison of Bertlmann socks.

Life

Bertlmann studied Technical Physics at the Vienna University of Technology and Theoretical Physics and Mathematics at the University of Vienna, where he received his doctorate. He worked as a research assistant in Vienna, at the JINR in Dubna and CERN. After his habilitation in theoretical physics in Vienna, he held visiting professorships in Marseille, at the University of Paris-Sud and CNRS. Since 1987 he is Associate Professor at the University of Vienna.

Work

Bertlmann deals in quantum physics, among others, the generalized Bell 's inequalities, entanglement, decoherence and geometric properties. He also deals with anomalies in quantum field theory.

He has worked or is working under another with John Stewart Bell, Walter Thirring and Anton Zeilinger together.

Bertlmann socks

In 1978 Bertlmann to CERN where he worked together with JS Bell. Bertlmann always wore different colored socks. 1981 Bell wrote his article " Bertlmann 's socks and the nature of reality " ( Bertlmann's socks and the nature of reality ). In it, he compared the EPR effect with Bertlmann socks: If Bertlmann comes around a corner and you can see which color has one of his socks, then one could predict with certainty that the second sock has not even this color. So the idea would suggest that is not true of the quantum entanglement as well. However, this is an oversimplification. Later in the article Bell explains the actual physical relationships.

Bells text can also be found in his book " Speakable and Unspeakable in Quantum Mechanics ". 2006 saw the German translation of a book by Shimon Malin under the title " Dr. Bertlmann socks ".
