He began formal study at the Gymnasium in Sagan (now Żagań ) and at the Theological School in Berlin, where he graduated in 1866 with a degree. Since 1868, he taught as a teacher at Luisenstädtischer Real Gymnasium in Berlin. From 1876 to 1904 he worked at the Humboldt Gymnasium in Berlin, first as a senior teacher and from 1882 as a professor. He also published numerous works on the history of the Crusades and the geography of Palestine. In 1904 he was forced to leave for health reasons in retirement. Just one year after reeds died.

Crusade researchers

Although reed is still regarded as one of the most important German historian of the crusade research, he is hardly noticed in the relevant lexicon works. That may be because he taught at any university and was not duly honored during his lifetime. However, in an obituary in an American historian magazine one years after his death has already been made on its meaning. He had written the most important ever written by a researcher contributions to the history of the Crusades, with eight major works. Hans Eberhard Mayer, who had looked closely at the life and historical impact of reeds, says on its significance, though reeds is more an antiquarian been as a historian, but he still had laid the fundamentals for modern crusade research.
