Reisach Priory

The monastery Reisach is a monastery of the Discalced Carmelites in the town of Oberau Niederau village near village in Bavaria in the diocese of Munich and Freising.

History

The St. Theresa consecrated monastery was founded in 1731 by Johann Georg cutlers, an Elector of Bavaria Hofkammerrat under the name Abbey Urfahrn. It was built by Abraham and his son Philip Millauer by the Munich court architect Johann Baptist Gunetzrhainer 1737-1747. The equipment of the church comes from the Munich court painter Balthasar August Albrecht. The monastery was dissolved in 1802 in the wake of secularization. It was determined the central monastery of the remaining repealed Karmelitenklöster. 1836/37 it was rebuilt under the name Reisach Monastery.

Attractions

The Baroque crib in the Carmelite Church is one of the most quality church nurseries in Upper Bavarian region and dates from the second half of the 18th century.

The large relief images of wood on the side altars are unique in their kind.
