Renat Nelli

René Nelli ( born February 20, 1906 in Carcassonne, † March 11, 1982 in Carcassonne ) was a French poet, linguist, Okzitanist, historian and ethnologist.

Life and work

Nelli studied in Paris and Toulouse, graduating with the Licence from. He was a high school teacher in Maubeuge, Castelnaudary and Carcassonne, also from 1946 to 1963 director of the museum in Carcassonne and at the same time a lecturer in French anthropology at the University of Toulouse. He habilitated in 1962 with the two theses L' érotique the troubadours. Contribution à l' étude ethno- sociologique the origines sociales et de l' idée du sentiment d' amour (Toulouse 1963, 1984, 1997, Paris 1974 Prix J.-J. Weiss 1964, the Académie française ) and Le Roman de Flamenca. Un art d' aimer Occitan au XIIIe siècle (Toulouse 1966, 1989).

Nelli in 1945 was a co-founder of the Institut d' Estudis Occitans. He was committed to the political recognition of the Occitan regional culture, but did not live to their breakthrough under Culture Minister Jack Lang. The Centre d' études Cathar founded by him in 1981 and later named after him existed until 2011.

Nelli was a knight of the Legion of Honour.
