Renate Winter

Renate Winter ( born March 8, 1944 in Vienna ) is an Austrian judge. She is since 2002 a judge at the Special Court for Sierra Leone and was 2008-2010 President of this Special Court. Renate Winter is an expert in issues of juvenile justice, family law as well as in issues of children and women's rights, especially in the context of armed conflict.

Life

Renate Winter, studied from 1962 to 1968 at the University of Vienna Law and French as Dolmetschstudium. After completing her studies, she began training as a judge and was from 1981 to 1996 as a judge at the Vienna Juvenile Court operates. From 1996 to 2000 she was the United Nations in Vienna consultant for the purpose of implementation of the CRC in developing countries. From 2000 to 2002 she worked as an international judge at the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo. In 2002 she was appointed by the UN Secretary-General as a judge of the Special Court for Sierra Leone. From 2008 to 2010 she was president of that court. Renate Winter has dealt with children's rights and passed in the 1990s, several UN conferences on this topic. In December 2012, she was elected for the period of four years in the UN Children's Rights Committee. The membership began on 1 March 2013.
