Renaud Island

The Renaud Island is the largest island in the Biscoe Islands in Antarctica. It is located about 40 kilometers off the Antarctic Peninsula and about 100 kilometers north of Adelaide Island. The ice-covered island has a land area of ​​approximately 618 km ² and a coastline of around 148 kilometers.

The island was discovered by the English whalers John Biscoe on his Antarctic expedition ( 1830-1832 ). In 1908 she was mapped by Jean -Baptiste Charcot, who named it after the French Hydro Count Joseph Marie Augustin Renaud ( 1854-1921 ).

On the rocks of the Armstrong riffs, two kilometers southwest of Renaud Island, is one of the largest colonies of Adeliepinguins is in the region of the Antarctic Peninsula. 1984 counted 12,800 breeding pairs. The colony is recognized by BirdLife International as an Important Bird Area ( Ant007 ).
