René Lussier

René Lussier ( born April 15, 1957 in Montreal ) is a Canadian musician (guitar, also bass guitar, bass clarinet) and composer who has emerged especially in the field of new music improvisation.

Life and work

Lussier started his musical career in 1973 in Chambly in the progressive rock band Arpege. Between 1976 and 1980 he was part of the Montreal band Conventum, the interpreted traditional waltzes and reels, but turned at the same time improvisation music and played to 1985 in groups from the environment of the Ensemble de Musique improvisée de Montréal as Quatuor de l' Emmieux and les Reins, Nebu and GUM Between 1982 and 1984, accompanied Lussier as the guitarist and the singer Pauline Julien. Since 1984 he has focused on a Improvisationsduo with Jean Derome, with whom he also toured internationally and the label ambiances Magnétiques founded. He also belonged to the Fred Frith Guitar Quartet and toured between 1989 and 1991 around the globe with his band Keep the Dog. Later, he presented a number of solo albums and engaged in joint projects with Martin Tétreault with the history of musique concrète and electro-acoustic music. He also worked with Chris Cutler, Robert M. Lepage and Pierre Hébert.

Since 1979, he frequently wrote film scores, first together with André Duchesne, then with Jean Derome. Overall, he has designed the soundtracks for more than 35 films, including the documentary Chronique d'un génocide annoncé about the genocide in Rwanda by Danièle Lacourse and Yvan Patry. For the flutist Lise Daoust he wrote the composition zone grise.

Prizes and awards

For his album Le trésor de la langue (1989 ), which dealt with bilingualism in Quebec City, he was awarded the Grand Prix Paul Gilson in the same year.
