RENFE Class 120 / 121

As a 120 series, the Spanish railway company Renfe denotes a series of 28 umspurbaren high-speed railcars. The four-car trains as Alvia train type on compounds containing both standard gauge new lines, as well as using existing broad gauge tracks.

The vehicles were supplied by CAF and Alstom.

The speed limit is 250 km / h with a contact wire voltage of 25 kV and 220 km / h under 3 kV. By CAF BRAVA system a Umspuren between Iberian broad and standard gauge is possible in about a minute. Eight of the sixteen axles are driven. The trains have 156 seats in the second and 81 seats in 1st class.

History

In May 2001, RENFE ordered 20 trains for fast regional traffic. The designed 250 to 270 km / h trains should consist of four cars and offer 237 passengers. They should be delivered starting in 2003 and subsequently used in the regional transport up to 250 km between Madrid, Guadalajara, Zaragoza and Lleida, and between Barcelona and Lleida. The order, which also includes the maintenance for 14 years included, was awarded for 440 million euros to Alstom (share of 270 million euros ) and CAF.

The trains were put into service on 17 May 2006 and perverted first on the new Madrid -Barcelona .. The travel time between Madrid and Barcelona was shortened, with an approximately one-minute Umspuren in Puigverd de Lleida, in four hours and 15 minutes.

The use of trains between Madrid and Barcelona ended with the opening of the through standard gauge high speed line in the spring of 2008, the trains have since been used in the following relations.:

  • Madrid -Valencia - Castellón
  • Madrid- Guadalajara - Irun
  • Madrid- Guadalajara - Logroño

Series 121

Renfe ordered in 2004 a further 29 trains, which are operated as series 121. The main differences from the 120 Series are the elimination of the first class and the cafeteria, bringing the seating capacity increased from 237 to 281. The first parts of the series 121 took in January 2009 on the service.
