Retranchement

Retranchement is a village in the municipality of Sluis in Zeeland Flanders in the Netherlands. It lies between the Belgian town of Knokke and the Dutch village Cadzand.

Retranchement - the French word for fortification - was by Prince Maurits ( Maurice of Orange ) founded in 1604 after his taking of the town of Sluis, about the mouth of the sea arm Zwin - the former connection between the North Sea and the now Belgian city of Bruges - against Spanish forces to secure. Remains of fortifications and Oranje Nassau are still good to see.
