Reuben Kamanga

Reuben Kamanga Chitandika ( born August 26, 1929 in Chitandika, Chipata, Eastern Province; † 20 September 1996) was a Zambian politician of the United National Independence Party ( UNIP ).

Life

During the struggle for the independence of Zambia Kimanga was first a member of the Northern Rhodesian African National Congress ( NRANC ) before he was co-founder in 1958 of only a few months existing Zambian African National Congress ( ZANC ). As such, he was arrested several times 1959-1960, before he lived from 1960 to 1962 in exile in Cairo. Then he returned to Zambia, where he was part of the government before independence as Minister of Labour and the mining industry and for transport and communication. He was also Vice President of the United National Independence Party ( UNIP ).

After the independence of Zambia on 24 October 1964, he was Vice President and thus representative of President Kenneth Kaunda. This office he held until 1967, and also acted as leader of UNIP in the National Assembly ( National Assembly). 1967 sparked his wife Edina Kamanga on their behavior in public a scandal. After 1967 his intra-party rivals and former party general secretary Simon Kapwepwe Vice President of UNIP was defeated in the election, he lost part of a government reshuffle, the office of the Vice President of Zambia at this and instead was foreign minister.

With a further reshuffle, he was in 1968 Minister for Rural Development. He was a member of the Central Committee of UNIP, in which he was also responsible for rural development from 1983. In a television interview in 1985, he reported on his experiences during the struggle for independence and the creation of NRANC, ZANC and UNIP.

1991 Kamanga withdrew from political life.
