Revol Bunin

Rewol Samuilowitsch Bunin (Russian Револь Самуилович Бунин; born April 6, 1924 in Moscow, † June 3, 1976 ) was a Russian composer.

Life

Since Bunin's parents were avid supporters of the October Revolution, they named their son " Rewol " as an abbreviation for " revolution." In his youth Rewol Bunin discovered his interest in music. In 1941 he entered the Moscow Conservatory and studied first with Vissarion Schebalin, then with Dmitri Shostakovich composition. After graduating in 1945 he became assistant Shostakovich at the Leningrad Conservatory. When Shostakovich was forced to retire as a supposed " formalist " his teaching career in 1948, it did not take long before Bunin as most students Shostakovich had to leave the university. The occasion was a concert of his music, which were then " formalist tendencies" attests. Until 1953 he worked at the State Music Publishing. Then he gave up a steady job and worked as a freelance composer. His time- life poor health (he was asthmatic ) led to his early death at the age of only 52 years.

Style

Bunin was strongly under the influence of his teacher Shostakovich. The theme the development, harmony, polyphonic structures as well as a predilection for rhythmic conciseness clearly indicate the model Shostakovich. His music was not particularly conservative - as it has not often a fairly considerable dissonance wealth on - but followed Bunin nor the latest trends of the musical avant-garde. At times, he experimented with moderate twelve-tone technique, but also had this interest soon after. Bunin's style can be compared to the Mieczysław Weinberg, another Shostakovich 's pupil. The focus of his work was on the orchestral music. Bunin's music was never particularly well known, but has a high quality.
