Rhenish Franconia

The duchies of East Francia and West Francia were short-lived part of the East Frankish Empire States and later the Holy Roman Empire ( Germany ). They had emerged from the division of the 939 collected ( repealed ) Duchy of Franconia, which was finally split up since 1039.

  • The Duchy of East Francia ( Francia Orientalis ), also called Main-Franconia, but not to be confused with the smaller Lower Franconia region, comprised the eastern half of the former Duchy of Würzburg with its capital. The princes and dukes of Babenberg were originally from this region, which later fell to Bavaria and still bears the name of Franks, see Franks ( region). To the East Franks also belonged to the Baden-Württemberg region of Franconia ( Heilbronn- Hohenlohe ), which is also known as Südfranken or Südrheinfranken. Therefore, the (large ) Baden- Württemberg coat of arms contains icons to the Holy Roman Duchy of East Francia in the crown. Furthermore, the historical culture Henneberger country which essentially corresponds to the current southern Thuringia.
  • The Duchy of West Francia, also Rhine Franks ( Francia Rhenensis ) called, but not to be confused with the root of the Rhine Franks, include western, lying on the Rhine half of the former Duchy of capital Worms. The Conradines or Salian came from this region and ruled as dukes quite francs or Germany and were replaced as such by the Swabians (Konrad III. ). The region corresponding to today's state of Hesse and Rhineland-Palatinate, the former administrative districts Montabaur, Rheinhessen and Pfalz.
