Rhodococcus equi

Rhodococcus equi is a gram-positive, coccoid rods. The bacterium is commonly found in dusty, dry soils and can reach a disease incidence around 60 percent in aquaculture production ( horses and goats). Since 2008 is also known that R. equi can infect domestic pigs and wild boars next. In foals, R. equi is the most frequent cause of respiratory diseases. There is also the possibility that the virus can be transmitted to humans. Especially in immunocompromised people such as AIDS patients, it can cause lung inflammation ( pneumonia ).

Synonyms

Falsely other species names are used for Rhodococcus equi. In addition to Corynebacterium equi synonyms such as Bacillus hoagii, Corynebacterium purulentus, Mycobacterium equi, Mycobacterium restrictum, Nocardia restricta and Proactinomyces restrictus are common.
