Rhuys Peninsula

Geographical location

The Rhuys Peninsula (also called " Arzon Peninsula " - French Presqu'ile de Rhuys ) is located in the Morbihan region of Brittany in France and separates the Atlantic Ocean from the Gulf of Morbihan ( Gulf of Morbihan, Breton the "little sea "). The main towns on the peninsula are Arzon, Sarzeau, Saint Armel and Saint- Gildas- de -Rhuys.

On the inland side of the coast is flat. She is interrupted here and there by salt marshes and salt meadows. The Atlantic coast is steep, however, and Caesar is said to have observed from the 15-meter high tumulus de Tumiac in the year 56 BC, the battle against the Veneti, who he described in De Bello Gallico.

However, the peninsula was previously a historic place where you will find some of the most interesting ancient monuments. Among the menhir of Kermaillard stands out, which was long since overthrown, and only revealed his carvings of a crescent moon and a stylized mother goddess with the erection.

The Kerlévenan castle, the castle Suscinio are from the 13th century and the Romanesque church of St. Gilda -de- Rhuys important historical attractions. In Kerner's ( just east of Arzon ) there is an old tide mill.
