Description

Rhynchospora species usually grow as a perennial, rarely as annuals, herbaceous plants. The several standing together, upright stems are triangular or terete. The undergraduate or distributed on the culm arranged leaves consist of a closed leaf sheath and a simple leaf blade. The rulers leaf blade is flat or canalicular.

The bracts are leaf-like foliage. The Rispige total inflorescence is composed of several aged men or capitate partial inflorescences. The stalked or sitting spikelets (Part inflorescences) are narrow - ovate, ovate or elliptical and can sometimes be somewhat flattened. The few to many einnervigen glumes are spirally arranged like roof tiles overlapping or rarely distichous; three or four basal glumes are shorter than the other and empty. Either all flowers hermaphrodite or in the inflorescence are the lower and the upper hermaphrodite male or sterile. There are no up to six, rarely up to 13, reduced to rough or smooth bristles bloom yet. There are two or three stamens present. The slim style ends in two scars.

The nut fruits are usually obovate to oval, biconvex, and its surface is structured differently or rarely smooth.

The first description of the genus Rhynchospora in 1805 by Martin Vahl in Enumeratio Plantarum ..., 2, p 229 are with the type species Rhynchospora alba (L.) Vahl Rhynchospora Vahl .. synonyms for: Dichromena Michaux and Psilocarya A.Gray.
