Rialto

Rialto ( from Italian rivo alto or Latin altus rivus = high bank ) is an area in the district of San Polo in Venice.

The area was first settled in the 9th century and included a group of islets, the Isole Rialtine, on the Rio Businiaco (now the Grand Canal ). From the year 1097 Rialto became the main trading center of Venice (see also Mercato di Rialto and economic history of the Republic of Venice). In order to make the area accessible from the other side of the Grand Canal, the Rialto Bridge was built. From 1422 the various trades own streets were assigned strengthened. In 1514 almost the whole district was destroyed by a major fire.

Even today, Rialto is influenced by commerce and hosts a fruit and a fish market.
